Every solopreneur and their sister are on Pinterest. No wonder it’s one of the biggest and fastest-growing social networks globally! As of 2021, Pinterest has 431 million active users worldwide, making it the third-largest social networking site globally. 

Suffice it to say, Pinterest is one of the best places to market a business but have you been using the platform properly? Let’s talk about the dos and dont’s of Pinterest marketing: 

The DOs of Pinterest Marketing

DO know your audience

Like traditional digital SEO marketing, you need to know to who to market your Pinterest pins and content for. Whether creating content for your blog or publishing pins, you need to conduct market research to attract your ideal audience! To start, you need to know the following:

• The demographics of your readers
• The struggles of your target audience
• What solutions to offer 

The key here is to present helpful information and solve problems. Presentation is just as important; your content quality must be stellar to attract your target audience. 

DO upgrade to a business account

Whether you’re building an online presence as a personal brand or a business brand, it’s a must to sign up for a business account on Pinterest. Why? This will unlock specific features that you won’t get in a Personal account, like analytics and ads. With these tools, you can track your marketing efforts and create ads to elevate your online presence within the platform. 

If you have a personal Pinterest account, you can create a linked Business account, create a new Business Account, or convert your personal account into a business account. 

DO claim your website

To make sure that you own the site, you have to claim it on Pinterest. Do this after setting up your Pinterest business account. Once you’ve claimed the website, you will be given two verification methods:

• Upload your website’s HTML file
• Add a meta tag to your website

DO embed social sharing buttons on your website and blog site

This is important; you want to make it easy for people to share your content and pin images on Pinterest! Set up the social sharing buttons on your website and blog site to encourage readers to pin your articles to their Pinterest boards. 

DO optimize your Pinterest content

Just like any piece of content you publish online, you have to optimize your Pinterest content with your primary keywords for better coverage and traffic. Pinterest is considered as a search engine for images, so it pays to optimize your photo descriptions, board descriptions, and even profile descriptions with your main keywords!

The DON’Ts of Pinterest Marketing

DON’T pass off other people’s photos as your own pins

This practice is frowned upon. Use your own stock images or, better yet, professional photos for your pins. 

DON’T use Pinterest images on your site

Unless you have permission to post the images from the owner, never use Pinterest images as promotional content on your website. Unless you came up with the visuals, do not use other people’s content as marketing materials. 

DON’T repin user images without marketing your own

You have to benefit from your marketing efforts even when repinning other people’s photos. A clever copy and a link to your own content should always accompany repins. 

DON’T repin images with improper source

Avoid repinning images that are not properly sourced. If you came across a pin that does not source properly, try leaving a comment to the original pinner to update the images. 

DON’T pin and repin the same content

To avoid being tagged as a spammer by moderators, do not repin the same pin repeatedly. Spammy content is a no-no on Pinterest, and you risk having your account suspended if you engage in spam activities. 

DON’T add too many hashtags

Hashtags help users narrow down their search when searching for specific topics online. But too much of a good thing can be bad for your Pinterest pins! Use hashtags sparingly. Keep the hashtags relevant to make them effective on Pinterest and other social media platforms.
