Having your own business is so much fun but it also comes with challenges. One of these can be staying focused on your business and not constantly moving around and changing things. This is something I have been guilty of and in 2017 I really learnt to have focus on what I want to achieve and keep that focus! Although I still have a lot of things on my plate, I am able to manage them and stay focused because I have some big goals I want to achieve. I also have a plan to make them happen.
I’ve also learnt that changing what I’m doing, moving the goal and not being clear on what I want to achieve, means I’ve often felt stuck. This, in turn, means the businesses I run haven’t always been moving forward.
So what changed?
To begin with, it was the frustration of not having the things I wanted to happen. I realised I needed to pick out my priorities and stick with them for at least a few months to see what worked and give business a chance.
Staying Focused
Now I focus on 3-5 things over a 12 week period. The time will go by quickly anyway so I might as well be productive with that time! This is the same for you. It can be small tasks such as posting to Instagram once a day for 12 weeks if that is something you are focused on. This way you know you have a small task to do every day and by reminding yourself it’s only for a short period of time (rather than the whole year) can help prevent overwhelm. After the 12 weeks, you may decide to do it again for another 12-weeks and end up doing all year round. However, by believing you will only do it for a few weeks and then reassessing does help with the focus.
Make a List
Another great tip to staying focused is to have a list of those tasks which you want to stay focused on. This way you are less likely to forget and adding them to your daily to-do list will mean you will get them done. On a side note – If you are finding you’re putting off the tasks you have set, think about why. It’s your business and you can make the rules! If this means you change your mind and stop doing the task or outsource the work instead then that’s ok. Outsourcing areas of your business that you struggle to keep up with or find especially challenging can be a beneficial way to maintain your focus. With specialist tasks such as Business IT Support passed over to the professionals, it will be so much easier for you to remain focused on the tasks on your to-do list without getting side-tracked. Running a business is about learning what works for you and what doesn’t. Once you know what you are going to be focused on then doing those tasks on a regular basis will move your business forward. Rather than having lots of big things to focus on, challenge yourself by focusing on the smaller tasks – the big things will follow and you are more likely to be able to keep the focus for longer!
