You know all those blog posts you wrote six months ago, a year ago maybe even longer?

It’s easy to forget we have them right?

They’re buried deep down under all your new posts, but why shouldn’t we use them again?

Why not update them and reuse them.

Updating old blog posts is not only going to help you continually bring in more traffic, but you’ve already written those posts.

So why not make them just a little bit better!

As we all know things on the internet seem to change on a dime and what we wrote about six months ago could have completely changed.

It’s important for us to go back to those older posts and make sure they are up to date and relevant to our audience.

Six of ways to update your old blog posts

1. Update the Length.

When I first started blogging, my posts were 500 words on a really good day.

But now, it’s important for SEO purposes to up that word count to at least 1000 words! Give your audience more information on the topic.

You probably know a whole heck of a lot more on that topic now than you did when you wrote the post, so update it with new information that you’ve learned!

Not only that, having longer blog posts is what’s working now. This may change again like all things seem to do but for now, longer blog posts are where it’s at!

2. Evaluate your blogging “voice”

Each and every one of us writes differently and we each have a blogging voice.

Chances are when you first began blogging, those first few blog posts you were a bit nervous.

Maybe those posts just aren’t you because you were still trying to figure out your voice.

Go back into those old posts and put your personality into them!

Not only that but as we grow and evolve, our blogging voices change and evolve as well.

It’s important to keep this voice updated and consistent throughout your blog posts so they are recognizable by your audience!

3. SEO friendly titles.

Oh man, this was the toughest thing for me when first starting out.

I just used whatever the heck title I felt like at the time! I didn’t have an inkling of a clue as to what SEO even was!

Going back in and reevaluating your titles is so so important for search engines!

This is how those posts are going to be found and you want those old posts to be found just as much as your new ones especially if those posts are evergreen content.

Meaning they are full of information that is useful regardless of the year.

4. Update the content.

As we know, the internet seems to change constantly and very quickly.

So maybe what was relevant last year or even six months ago is no longer relevant or useful.

The whole point of a blog post is to help your audience answer a question but if the answer is out of date, it’s not helping anyone!

Like I said, you’ve also probably learned so much more about that topic because you’ve been doing it longer!

Maybe you have an updated hack or an easier way to do something that you did back then.

Updating those posts will help keep them relevant and will help keep them circulating throughout the internet!

5. Add relevant posts to old posts.

By this I mean, you’ve probably written more posts on the topic that you had originally posted about, so add a link to those posts as well!

This will not only help out your audience with more relevant information but it will also help SEO by showing search engines that your post is highly valuable.

Adding more links to relevant posts will also ensure your audience stays on your blog longer!

The longer your audience is on your blog and searching for other posts, the more likely they are to join your email list and get more value from you!

6. Fix old/broken Links.

Broken links are links that no longer go anywhere.

This can happen if you had a website that you linked to in an old post that you longer have.

Or maybe you had a course, service or product that you linked to that is no longer available.

It’s important to update or eliminate broken links because it can be frustrating for your audience and it doesn’t help anyone if the link doesn’t lead to anything.

This can also go the other way.

Maybe you have a new product, service or freemium that you have created.

You can add these to your old relevant blog posts and drive more traffic to your product or service!

And you’re probably better at marketing now than you were when you first began so getting your posts in front of people is much easier!

This way your content can live on forever…or for as long as you want it to!

Updating old posts is not only helpful for SEO purposes but you can also use them if you are in a pinch and need to get a blog post out there.

Most likely you have grown your audience and not everyone scrolls through all of your posts, they usually just look at your newest posts so most of your audience probably hasn’t even seen your old posts!

I also like updating old blog posts just to see how far I’ve come because we are always growing and improving our craft!

I try to update my posts about every six months or less and of course, it depends on your niche.

If your niche is something that changes frequently, then go back in and update your posts frequently and vice versa!
