Reading Time: 2 minutes
As you are probably aware by now, one of my favourite business resources is Audible by Amazon. There is just something about being able to sit and draw up website concepts while listening to a book. Not only does it make me feel like I’m super productive, but I’m also learning and expanding my knowledge as I do so.
Let’s start with what I enjoyed most this Summer. Honestly, it’s a mixture of many topics. We have the fascinating fiction book “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The funny yet heartwarming “Girl Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis. The number and money focused “Profit First” by Mike Michalowicz, and the productivity booster “The 12 Week Year” by Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington.
I’m trying a new thing here. There are so many books I’ve always wanted to ready but not yet gotten around to. I’m making my business this year to read at least one classic each season. I started with “The Great Gatsby” for three reasons: Number one, it was on a 2 for 1 credit sale on Audible (WIN!). Number two, it’s narrated by Jake Gyllenhaal, and it’s incredibly mesmerising. And number three, Leonardo DiCaprio had me hooked since the minute he appeared as Jay Gatsby.
I did enjoy Girl Wash Your Face, but I ‘’m not sure I enjoyed it for its intended purpose. Although this book is very well written, I would describe it as more of a “motivational short story compilation” than a self-help book. The advice it has throughout it is rather generic but makes for an entertaining read. If you are looking for a self-help book, then I’m not sure you will find it here, as the primary point throughout the entire book is “Get it together!”. But if you are looking for a motivational book with entertaining short stories, definitely give it a go.
Now we’re talking! From chapter one Mike Michalowicz was all business. I love nothing more than a business book that gets its point across in full detail, and that’s precisely what “Profit First” did. It shows you how to efficiently set-up your bookkeeping system, how to categorise your bank account, how to save money efficiently. Everything you could think about setting up your finances for profit, it goes into. This is one I would recommend to all new business owners, and even to those who have been in business for years and just not read it.
This book gave me the kick up the butt that I need. In the 12 Week Year, Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington dig into how to structure your work week so you can achieve the same amount in 12 weeks that you usually do in a year. This certainly caught my attention. It’s all about planning and execution. It’s motivational, yet also constructive and actionable. Thank you, Brian and Michael, you’ve helped me pull so much from my work week with just one Audible book!
