Reading Time: 5 minutesNothing beats working from home – it made life easier (and more productive!) for solopreneurs, digital nomads, office folks, and busy bloggers (mom bloggers, travellers, etc.)
Working from home means you don't have to travel to the office, you can work without dealing with meddling co-workers, and you have lots of quiet time and all the personal space you want for yourself. Heck, you don't even need to work early in the morning when you're working from home.
What's more, working from home lets you work anywhere as long as you have your trusty mobile devices and internet connection.
For some WFH solopreneurs, working in an ideal setup motivates them to work harder. But there are some who struggle to get anything done when they're working from home. Just like anything in life, there are times when we don't feel our best, and our output is affected.
How do you stay productive?
That's what this guide is all about. Working from home has its benefits, but if you're struggling to achieve your everyday goals, here are some tips:
When you're working from home, you can pretty much set your laptop anywhere and start working. It's convenient this way, and you might even say, productive, but it's quite the contrary.
When you don't have a specific area for working, you will only get a little done because you'll bound to find distractions interrupting your thought process as you work.
For instance, working on the dining table means less space for the kids during lunch or exposure to noise outside. Working while lying in bed is a slippery slope because you might end up feeling drowsy while in the middle of work or hurting your back because you are sitting or lying down on a soft surface for hours. Working on a kitchen table might sound like a great idea, but it will be harder to achieve the right mindset working in odd places. Also, people can go in and out of the kitchen and interrupt your thought process.
If you have a spare room, you can turn this space into a home office. If you can only spare a few feet of blank space anywhere in your home, use this as a mini office. The idea is to have an actual desk where you can sit down, get some work done, and have some peace and quiet while at it.
Developing a work routine at home helps achieve the right mindset. There is no need to stick to the traditional 9-5 work schedule if you're not a morning person. You can choose the best time to start working when working from home.
If you are the type who can't wake up to work at 9 in the morning, you can start work at noon. If you're an early bird, you can work around 7-8 in the morning, if that is your most productive time. If you have to take the kids to school or take a morning walk, you can adjust your work schedule around these activities to maximise the hours.
The idea is to determine the best time for you to work and build a work schedule around it. This way, your mind is 100% present, you get everything done on time, and you don't feel burned out at all.
Apart from building a work routine around times when you feel the most productive, it helps to manage your tasks wisely so you don't feel overwhelmed the minute you start working. Start with the easiest tasks to warm up, such as responding to emails, checking your to-dos for the day, and monitoring the progress of projects.
Make it a point to focus on 3 to 4 priority tasks to complete within the day. Use your energy to tackle these critical tasks throughout the day.
In between tasks, remember to get up from your chair to stretch your legs and move around. Take a break in the mid-morning so you won't feel overwhelmed. Make the most of your break during lunch hour by practising mindfulness.
Working from home means you are the IT, and using the wrong tools can be more trouble than they're worth. Investing in the right tools will do wonders for your blogging business. Starting with your blog, opt for a dependable website builder known for its intuitively designed themes.
By investing in the right technology, you'll be able to accomplish more tasks on autopilot and avoid feeling burned out at the end of the day.
Staying productive at home requires discipline. If you let household chores and other distractions interrupt your work hours, you'll never finish anything. That's why setting clear boundaries is a must.
Set time limits: This is easily one of the quickest ways to work smart. Define your daily goals with a time limit to complete each one. The time limit can be daily, weekly, or longer, depending on the project. The most important part is sticking to the time limit and completing the tasks on time.
Set a schedule:
Work out a schedule with your family members and let them know when's the best time you're most busy. Coordinate with your spouse for childcare – one could take care of the kids and the chores that come with them during the day while the other works and vice versa.
Being at home all day doesn't mean your friends and extended family have access to you 24/7. Be clear about your schedule to get things done. Let friends and family members know when you're available and busy.
Apart from the 5 tips we've outlined above, it's essential to keep these quick tips to stay productive while also taking care of yourself:
