When you're a business owner, it's easy for your business to get mixed up with your personal life. This is especially true if you run your business from home or you're just getting your small business off the ground. You can end up spending too long on business matters and neglecting your personal life, or you can let your personal life distract you from your work. Separating your business from your personal life is essential if you want to keep both in order and prevent one from upsetting the other. But what should you do if you want to prevent them from mingling?
Separating Business and Family
Many people who start a small business run it as a family business. They employ family members or perhaps intend to pass their business onto their children when it's time for them to retire. However, it can often be best to separate business and family. Problems can arise when you're working with people who are also your relatives. It may be smart to talk to an expert about how to keep business and family separate. This can be especially necessary when you're getting married or in cases of divorce or separation. You might wish to ensure you get to keep all of your business.
Create Physical Separation
One of the simplest ways to create separation between your personal life and your business is by creating a physical separation. Working from home might be convenient and help you save money, but it can also make it difficult for you to draw a line between your personal life and business life. If you are working at home, having a separate office (or just a dedicated workspace if you don't have a spare room) will help you to keep your work away from your personal life. If possible, consider working away from home instead.
Keep Set Hours
Another way to keep your personal life and business separate is to work set hours. It's easy for your business to bleed into your personal life when you make yourself available at all times. You can end up neglecting things in your personal life because you're always getting distracted by business. If this is a problem for you, have clear hours when you're working and when you've switched off for the day. Unless there's an emergency, your work can wait until the next day.
Separate Your Lines of Contact
Mixing up personal and business communication can cause a problem. That's why it's important to keep these things separate as much as possible. It's a good idea to have a separate phone number and email for your business, so nothing gets mixed in with your personal communication. Create different social media accounts to use for your business too, including accounts just for you that are separate to your personal profiles. It will enable you to run social media accounts that are professional and focused on business.
Separate your business from your personal life to keep things tidy and prevent problems from the two things mixing.
