Reading Time: 5 minutesYou have this incredible blog. You're driving traffic like crazy and people are LOVING it. This is pretty awesome, right? But then they leave. Why?
Because there is no next step. They come to your blog, digest your amazing, well written and in-depth articles, maybe comment or purchase using your affiliate link but then they continue on with their day. What can you do to stop this madness?
And the best way to build an email list is to create incredible lead magnets that actually convert. Which brings me to this post right here and now. If you want to learn how to create lead magnets that convert and build you that magical email list then stick around.
this post contains affiliate links which means, I may earn a small commission if you chose to purchase using my link at no cost to you.
I know, I know, email marketing is the last thing on our minds but it's so important. And you already know that everyone and their great-aunt Shirley is telling you that you need one so let's stop fighting it and break it down.
1. An email list ensures you reach your audience without the fear of ever-changing algorithms or social media drama.
2. You have a list of raving fans that love what you do and already know, like and trust you. If they trust you enough to give you their email addresses they are going to trust you when you recommend a product or service, even if that's an affiliate product.
3. You're giving your audience a next step, another place to go for even more valuable information.
4. You can drive more blog traffic by using your email list. Chances are people aren't waiting by your blog and refreshing it every five minutes hoping for a new post. You can simply send an email with a snippet of the new post then link to it, driving more traffic to your blog and encouraging social shares.
A lead magnet is simply something you create to attract your ideal audience to join your email list. This means they are giving you their email address in exchange for something else. Like everything else in blogging and business, a lead magnet is made specifically for your audience to provide value and solve a problem. Once that person is on your email list you continue to send them valuable emails pertaining to that particular free download. If you sent them a free grocery checklist, you would continue to email them about how to make grocery shopping easier, maybe even another free grocery list, how to organize your grocery shopping trips, how to grocery shop with kids and so on.
Basically, the idea of a lead magnet is to get your customer away from the noise of social media and build that bigger connection via email. There are lead magnet examples that are highly effective to help you get more leads and turns into customers. This builds trust with your audience and ensures you are in showing up in their emails weekly or biweekly.
A lead magnet is technically anything that will provide value and give your audience a simple solution to a problem. This means you can create ebooks, workbooks, checklists, downloadable PDFs, short videos, you get the idea. Literally, anything that helps your audience solve a problem.
I wish I could say lead magnets are as simple as slapping together a coupon code or writing down a few sentences on a PDF but it's not. People are much more guarded with their emails than they used to be, so you need to give them something with incredible value.
Here are a few of the ingredients for a successful lead magnet:
Gives a simple solution to a problem: Your audience has trouble finding the time to write during the day or after work, your solution? A detailed batch scheduling PDF. Simple solutions are key.
Quick and Actionable: People don't have a lot of time. Give them an actionable step they can take to solve their problem that doesn't take too much time and will give them results quickly.
Quick and Easy to Consume: Like I said, people don't have a lot of time so if they download your free video tutorial and it's 40 minutes long, they're probably not going to watch it because it appears to have a large time investment involved. Instead, break down simple, actionable and easy to digest steps in an efficient manner.
Make it Specific: You don't want just anyone joining your email list. You've worked hard to build it. Make your lead magnets as specific as possible to attract a specific audience.
Show off your Knowledge: Your lead magnet might be the first impression someone has of you so show them you know your stuff!
Before we get into the fancy landing pages, which are actually not that fancy at all, you have to decide what type of lead magnet you're going to create for your audience. This is when having a specific blog niche in mind can be helpful. Take a step back and think about the lead magnets you've ever signed up for. And if you think you haven't signed up for any, you probably have but maybe didn't realize it. Whether it was a 20% off coupon at your favorite online boutique or free credit report, if you had to put your email in to get it, you signed up for a lead magnet.
Now think about which lead magnets worked. Which stores did you go back to? What websites did you actually use your free gift from? Looking at what you like and fully understanding your audience can give you some insight on how to create your own lead magnet. If you never used that free 20% coupon (I always forget I have it and don't end up using it) then don't offer that as a lead magnet.
Remember, this is all about your audience and what they will find value in. To create ebooks, checklists, PDFs, workbooks, or worksheets, you can use canva.com.
You've created your lead magnet, it's full of value, is specific, actionable and gives a quick solution to a problem and now you're ready to get it out there for the world to see!
What you need now is an email provider. An email provider is basically just a place that helps you send, segment, and keep track of your email subscribers. This can be any email provider you want including Flodesk, Convert Kit, Constant Contact..etc.
Most of these email providers give you the option of creating a landing page for free with their service. You can also go through companies that specifically create landing pages like, lead pages and opt-in monster. I personally go with the email provider lead pages because they're clean, simple and easy to set up.
The key to a highly converting landing page is to use a headline that resonates with your audience. Using the headline, “sign up for my newsletter” doesn't work and isn't specific. Tell your audience what they are getting when they sign up. I recommend using the advanced marketing institute headline analyzer to find the perfect wording for your lead magnet landing page headline. It's free to use and will give you a score based on which emotion your headline taps into.
Knowing what to create, how to create it and where to host it is one thing, but now where do you put your lead magnet for people to actually sign up? Put it everywhere! Well, okay, not everywhere but anywhere that is relevant. This means relevant blog posts, on the sidebar of your blog, on your social media accounts and even on Pinterest.
At the end of the day creating a high converting lead magnet comes down to providing solid value and actionable solutions for your audience. Now it's your turn to get out and start creating those lead magnets for your audience!
