Starting your own blog is exciting. It can lead to many new opportunities; you can build your own brand, and ultimately it could become a business for you. So when does your blog become a business?
When does your blog become a business?
You need to register with HMRC in the UK when you first make any money from your blog. So in the eyes of the law, you have a business once money has been exchanged between you and someone else for services to your blog.
However, for me, your blog can become a business from day one. If you decide to treat it like one.
When you treat your blog like a business, it shows you are taking it seriously. If you want your blog to be a hobby, that’s absolutely fine, but many people start a blog with the dream of earning an income to bring into the home. Treating your blog like a business makes you more likely to make money from it; you will take it more seriously, and so will those around you.
Here are a few things you can do to make it feel more like a business:
Money:
Have a separate bank account for your blog. This way, you can keep track of your outgoings and incomings when you start to make money. A spreadsheet is an excellent place to start, or I use Xero, which is online cloud accounting you can access from anywhere and links up to your bank!
Business Cards:
Having some business cards can make you feel like you have a business, and these are great to give to people so they can connect with you. Business cards are essential if you attend networking events.
Stay Consistent:
Behaving online like it’s a business. By this, I mean keeping the consistency of your social media and blog posts up. Think about what you would do if you were blogging for a job. Do your best to act like this now!
Keep Learning:
Continue to learn and analyze what you are doing. Then, look back to see what’s worked for you and hasn’t.
Spread the Word:
Finally, it’s about telling people what you do. Tell the world you write a blog, connect with brands you like to work with, and have confidence in what you are creating!
