Reading Time: 3 minutesRunning a business isn’t all about profits and making money for yourself – some people, perhaps you if you’re reading this, prefer to run a charity, and use the money they make to do good in the world, in whatever way that makes sense for them (there are so many different causes, there’s sure to be something that resonates with you and your beliefs, so choosing to start a charity and decide what to give your money to shouldn’t be a difficult thing to do).
Of course, the basic principles and goals still need to be the same, whether you run a traditional business or a charity, and working out how to be more successful has to be one of those goals (and perhaps the most important goal of all). With that in mind, here are some things to bear in mind if you want your business to be more successful.
Every charity needs to have a mission that you can tell other people about, and use to convince them to give money to your cause. That means you need to really think hard about what your mission is, and define it in as simple terms as possible, otherwise it’s going to be hard to tell people about it and that means they’ll be less sure about giving money to the cause – they’ll give their money to a charity they understand more instead.
That’s why you need to take the time to think about your mission and articulate it as well as possible in your mission statement, giving clear goals that you can measure and give updates on so everyone involved understands what you want to achieve. When we say everyone involved, that means you, your staff, the people you want to help, and the people you want to donate to your cause. Make it all as clear and simple as possible, and you’ll stand a better chance of success.
If you’re looking for long-term success in the charity of non-profit sector, it’s often going to come down to the relationships you build and how strong they are, which is why you need to work hard on building strong relationships and connections with donors, volunteers, beneficiaries, and anyone else involved.
There are a few different ways to do that, but one that’s always going to work is to show real appreciation for what people are doing for you. You’ll also need to make sure you always communicate well (and that it’s constant so you can keep everyone updated on the cause and how your charity is helping), and you’ll need to build trust – as we said above, you’ll want people to donate, so trust is vital. Strong relationships can lead to much more support, more opportunities to work with others, and valuable word-of-mouth marketing too.
In the modern world, using technology to help with your charity can make everything you do a lot more successful, resulting in more money being donated to your good cause. There are many different types of technology you can put in place that will make donating easier and mean you can use the money you get more efficiently. Take online fundraising platforms, for example; if people can give money online over a secure website, they’ll feel they can trust you more, plus you won’t have to deal with cash or have volunteers outside collecting money (which is inefficient and can potentially put people off giving at all).
A CRM (customer relationship management) system can also be hugely useful when you’re running a charity. Using charity CRM systems can give you all kinds of information you can use to improve the success of your non-profit. You can look at the average amount people donate, you can send out reminder emails about new campaigns and causes, you can tailor your advertising to your target market, and so much more. It makes everything a lot more efficient and streamlined, and ultimately gives you a lot more chance to make money.
No matter what your good cause might be, if you really want to see success and get lots of donations, something that can help is to collaborate with partners. Those partners might be other charities, local businesses, government agencies, or perhaps community groups (it’s going to depend on what you’re raising money for in many cases, as well as what you’re asking for).
When you’re working with others and heading towards a shared goal of some kind, you can become a lot stronger and bigger, and that means you can achieve a lot more and have much more of an impact, which is always the goal you should be aiming for.
