Why a Custom Website May Not Be For You

You’ve started a new business. Built your own product or service. Created your brand new Instagram. Now it’s time for a new website. However before you drop the big bucks and get yourself a custom website design, first figure out if you need it.

 

Many many people come into my inbox looking for their first ever custom website design. And many of those people are within their first month of business. They stress to me that they are on a tight budget. They want to span their payment plan out across months and months as they are not yet making a profit in their business. This is what worries me. By all means stretch your payment plan to suite you. But if you are not yet making a profit within your business, NO!

So many people think that in order to have a legitimate business, you need the greatest website in the world. That is not the case. While yes it’s amazing to have something custom and bespoke just to you, most clients do not know the difference between a website template and a £2,000 custom design. You know the difference, I know the difference, and others in the industry know the difference. But to your average Joe, they just see a nice website.

Did you know, approximately 20% of small businesses fail within their first year, and 50% in their first 5 years? I have heard two main reasons for this in my time. Number one is new entrepreneurs not knowing how to manage their money. Number two is that someone will open a business, and it turns out it’s not really what they want to do.
