If you have a team then you need to make sure that they feel secure enough to share their thoughts and feelings, freely. They need to do so, without worrying about opening themselves up to any negative or emotional effects.
Why is it Important to Feel Emotionally Safe at Work?
There has been a lot of research done into the benefits that come with emotional safety. Feeling emotionally safe at work means that your employees are able to speak up and then communicate openly. They are not held back by their views, and they are also able to make themselves vulnerable to criticism. This is vital for those who work in safety-critical jobs. This could include healthcare for example. If a staff member does not speak up, then this could have somewhat devastating consequences. Innovation and creativity is very important for a lot of organisations, but when people feel as though they cannot share their ideas and thoughts, often it is impaired. If you know that your team are concerned about height safety or if they are concerned about the workplace then as a leader, it is your job to make sure that they feel comfortable enough to share their thoughts with you.
It’s Okay to Make a Mistake
What would happen if someone made a mistake right now? If you are an employer, then you need to try and make people feel safe if they make an error. You have to make sure that people do not think any less of the person who made a mistake. That being said, you also need to make sure that the person is willing to own up to their mistake. If you can ensure that this is the case then there’s no reason why you can’t increase your workplace safety, on an emotional level.
Contribution Matters
Having a sense of emotional safety really does stem from the feeling of being somewhat needed. Your team have to know that their contribution matters and that it is important. If you can give them this kind of support then their confidence will rocket. As an employer, you cannot guarantee the future, but you can reassure your team that they are valued, and you can also give them a sense of security in their job role as well.
Give your Team a Voice
Employees need to be able to have their own voice and they also need to be able to express their thoughts and views as well. They need to feel as though it is okay for them to speak up and that they are going to be listened to. It’s vital that you take a look at ways that your company can enable employees to have their voice heard and that you consider whether you can give them more opportunities to do so. If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to push things forward and this can really work in your favour. It will also help your team to reach their full potential.
