Once again, Mark Zuckerberg broke the peace last week when he announced the latest Facebook algorithm update. These changes show more personal posts appearing in your newsfeed, and block out the small businesses who cannot afford to pay £££ for advertising through promoted posts or social influencers.
Although this is terrible for small business, it will surely show a rise in the social influencer. For those who are not aware, that pretty girl you follow on Instagram who's always looking perfect, the one who seems to lead a dream life with all of these amazing products you just NEED to buy, she is a social influencer. The person who is sponsored by companies to just drop a hint of “this product changed my life” into casual posts.
Influencers have the ability to take a brand from zero to 100 super quickly. They put a product in-front of you in a non-salesy way, and you just scoop it right up. They bring a tonne of exposure, sales, and engagement to your products.
As Instagram is owned by Facebook, you can expect this behaviour to carry across to that platform also. Why would Zuckerberg let businesses thrive for free when he knows he can make a quick buck off us otherwise.
This is not the first time Facebook has caused problems for small businesses. For the past few years, my business page posts have been “seen by 123 people”. Now that might not be a problem for some. But when you look at the fact that I have 11k+ likes and followers on my page, it gets a little upsetting!
Bring back the two options of chronicle feed and top posts please. Those were the days when you never missed out on anything. My Facebook is currently not filled with businesses harassing me, nor is it filled with my friends and family. You know what it is filled with? Memes! Friends tagging each-other in silly memes… If this is the future of Facebook then I don't think I want to be involved with it.
So to put it all in perspective. Facebook will no longer be showing business posts. Get your products out there so PEOPLE can speak about them instead of companies. That way your newsfeed will be full of fantastic brand recommendations (…and memes).
