Not everyone is cut out to run a business. Starting a company from the ground up takes a huge amount of hard work and innovation. And once you have created your vision, you then need to ensure it stays successful and profitable while keeping your employees and clients happy.
Although there is no fixed blueprint for a successful entrepreneur, there are some key personality traits that make you more likely to triumph in the business landscape. 20% of new businesses fail within the first year, so you need to embody these characteristics if you don’t want to become just another statistic. So how can you become the type of person that wins big? To set you up for prosperity in the new year, here are the four key traits of a successful business leader.
Empathy
When you run a successful company, you will be dealing with people all the time. You’ll have a team of employees to manage, clients to keep happy, and a whole list of partners, suppliers, investors, and other third-party companies coming in and out of your life. Being a people person is essential. But good communication is not about being extroverted and sociable, it’s about empathy. You need to understand people and how the decisions you make impact on them. By being more empathetic, your employees will respect you and feel able to come to you with their problems. They will be happier and more productive as a result. You will also be able to cultivate stronger relationships with your clients, leading to repeat business and brand loyalty.
Adaptability
Nothing ever goes to plan in business. If you are a rigid manager with a narrow vision and a set way of doing things, you will crumble the minute something goes wrong. But if you can be adaptable and expect the unexpected then you’ll be prepared for any setbacks that might occur.. Adaptability is also about being open to different ways of working and any new technologies or trends that could help your company to grow. Be willing to make changes to your business in pursuit of the greater good.
Commitment
In the early stages of building your company, you will have to work harder than you’ve ever worked in your life. Until you can get your brand out there and cultivate a client base, you’ll essentially be working for nothing. You’ll be up at the crack of dawn and working late into the night to get things done. And if you don’t have the drive and commitment to stay at it, you’ll be more likely to give up at the first sign of difficulty.
Self-awareness
Nobody’s perfect, yet so many business leaders out there seem to think they are God’s gift to the world. A little self-awareness goes a long way when you are in a position of power. You need to be able to identify your strengths and weaknesses and use this knowledge to run your company in the best way for you. Work on your flaws and always strive to improve yourself.
